7 Benefits to Homeschooling Outdoors

Did you know that there are awesome benefits to homeschooling outdoors? Sometimes we need to move our classroom to the great outdoors for one reason or another.  This can be a big plus to the day and really make school work seem like less of a chore. If you don’t already take school outside once in awhile you might after this. Here is a list of 7 reasons why!

7 Benefits to Homeschooling Outdoors

  1. Fresh air- The wonderful healthy fresh air they receive is a priceless benefit of taking classes outdoors. Too often we get stuck in our homeschool rut of doing worksheets at the desk ,or even games on the living room floor that we forget to not neglect their outdoor time- I know that it is at least a challenge for me. Fresh air stimulates the mind and other senses, boosting brain power.

  2. Sunshine- The many benefits sunshine brings should be a natural part of all stages of childhood so it just makes sense to work it into your school day. Sunlight improves mood, stimulates your body’s production of Vitamin D, moderate sun exposure is good for skin- even conditions like psoriasis! Be sure you are all getting your daily dose!

  3. Nature Studies- Doing a study on bugs, birds, soil, rocks, ponds, snakes, trees, plants, gardening, butterflies, weather, the ocean, constellations, or  countless other nature topics? There is absolutely no better classroom than the outdoors for learning about these subjects. Grab a nature journal, pencil, and maybe a camera then head out for some on location learning!

  4. Break from the norm- Changing up our environment can give us a fresh perspective.  Take math outdoors, breathe deep and tackle it in a fresh new light and atmosphere! It can be in your backyard, at the park, or perhaps while on a camping trip! One of the most wonderful parts of homeschooling is the flexibilit-you can change your setting anytime you want.

  5. Art inspiration- Take your art lessons outdoors and recreate the beautiful scenery you see around you. Whether pencil sketches, watercolor, charcoal, or through photography you and your child can use nature to inspire your artwork.

  6. Exercise- While there may be work to be done getting the kids outside for a nature walk, riding bikes, or a simple game of catch will get the blood pumping. Spelling can get done later, head outside for 15 minutes if you have hit a stump in your school work and let those little bodies get some wiggles out.

  7. Experiences- Inside the walls of your home is their fortress and where they can relax and feel safe-that is important. Getting out to outdoor concerts, zoos, horseback riding, swimming at a state park, construction sites, a you pick farm, etc.. can open up all sorts of fun and rich hands on experiences for your family that can be invaluable to your learning and will also create family memories.

What are some of your favorite ways to take homeschooling outdoors? One of our favorite ways is going to our local forest and hiking. This is a great adventure every time we go.
