When you think about summer camp, sending your kids off on their own to camp might come to mind. However, there are also camps specifically meant for the whole family, summer camps for families. This allows you to enjoy the time with your kids, while also allowing them to benefit from camp.

Benefits of Family Summer Camp

A common question asked b people who are thinking about family summer camp is what are the main benefits? While you can definitely find sleep-away camps for just the kids, don’t you want to enjoy the fun time with them? These camps are not just to give your kids something fun to do over the summer, though that is definitely a perk

. They are often there to build lasting relationships within the family and help you grow closer together. Whether you have dealt with trauma or emotional issues in your family, or simply want more quality time together, it is a great way to participate in activities as a family.

There will also be activities just for the adults or just the kids, so you do get time with other adults while the kids have their own fun.

Types of Family-Centric Activities

Family summer camps have many of the same activities you would expect at children-only camps, like swimming, roasting marshmallows, and singing songs over a fire. There are also more water activities like fishing, kayaking, canoeing, and wakeboarding. You might have land activities to enjoy together like tennis, basketball, archery, and horseback riding.

Learning about the wildlife, local plants and flowers, and how to survive in the wilderness are often included. You can even get together indoors to learn about photography, arts and crafts, theater, and dancing.

The adults might go on their own nature hike while kids learn to make crafts, and vice versa. It can be a lot of fun for the whole family.

Typical Sleeping and Living Arrangements

With family summer camps, the lodging is also similar to other types of amps. There might be cabins for the individual families only or to be shared by others. Bathrooms are typically shared and include multiple stalls and showers for everyone to use.

Some camps might be more rugged where you sleep in tents together instead of cabins. You will often have meals together with everyone at the camp, not just your own family.

Consider the many ways you will benefit by going to camp as a family instead of sending your kids alone. You can enjoy this time together, improve your personal relationships, and have a family vacation all rolled into one summer camping experience.
